WEB RESOURCES RELATED
TO CONFLICT IN IRAQ
======================================
There's a new web resource on the USDOE website at http://www.ed.gov/emergencyplan -- designed to help schools plan for emergencies. Among the resources on the website is a two-page document, Emergency Planning for Schools, that provides a fundamental overview of the issues to be considered in an emergency plan. First and foremost is the importance of addressing terrorism as part of a larger response strategy that includes natural disasters and other types of violence.
USDOE has provided a partial list of websites dealing with the conflict in Iraq that you might wish to use. These sites represent a variety of opinions and positions on the subject and are appropriate for students from middle school on up. These sites would be ideal for teachers wishing to guide their students to projects involving investigation and critical thinking. An informed and spirited debate could certainly result after a half-hour of researching these sites.
http://www.state.gov/p/nea/ci/c3212.htm -- This is the Department of State website with the latest information on the Iraqi situation.
http://www.iraqresearch.com/html/links2.html -- This is a site containing information from a number of perspectives including the U.S., Great Britain, and the U.N. (including documents by Hans Blix).
http://www.defenselink.mil/ -- This is the Department of Defense site, with a great number of informative documents.
http://www.un.org/english/ - There is a special section entitled "The Situation in Iraq" on the United Nations website with a great deal of information.
http://www.time.com/time/iraq/ -- Time Magazine, March 18th issue.
http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/ops/iraq.htm -- Military analysis by the Federation of American Scientists.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/world/mideast/gulf/iraq/commentary/ -- The Washington Post: pros and cons about war with Iraq.
http://www.nasponline.org/NEAT/911memorial.html -- This site of the American Association of School Psychologists has references to a huge number of other sites dealing with terrorism as it relates to schools and students. While much of it deals with the aftermath of the attacks of 9/11/01, it contains much valuable information applicable to the current situation with Iraq.
