ICT LITERACY in K-8

District Planning to Meet the New ICT Literacy Requirements for K-8

The Local Educational Support Center Network (LESCN) and the Office of Educational Technology at the NHDOE are providing a variety of opportunities to NH school districts, to assist in meeting the New Hampshire School Minimum Standards Ed 306.42, Information and Communication Technologies Program (ICT).

This month and next, your district is invited to send a team of 3-4 educators for a free day-long session 1) to increase your staff's understanding of the ICT Literacy requirements for schools, and 2) to build on what your district is already doing in its curriculum to develop tools to help your teachers meet the ICT standards and the portfolio requirements:

·    Beginning with your district's curriculum, identifying where the standards are already addressed, and locating areas where they can be applied.

·    Providing models of the activity for teachers to do this with their own lessons

·    Identifying district needs for tech professional development for teachers

·    Discussing the nature of portfolios and varying kinds of portfolios used for different educational goals / philosophies that will still meet the requirements.

Each participating district should put together a team of 3-4 educators, ideally spanning the K-8 grade level -- including lower elementary, upper elementary and middle classroom teachers as well as curriculum coordinators / specialists. Technology expertise is NOT required. Priority will be given to high needs districts, districts and schools designated as In Need of Improvement, and districts with a need for assistance with technology. Funds are available to cover stipends and substitute reimbursement.

Please contact one of the centers listed below for details and to register for a session.

May 15-16 in Gorham at NCES PD Center
May 22 in Keene at SWNH Education Support Center

May 23 in Claremont at Sugar River PD Center

May 31 in Penacook at CACES

June 6 in Exeter at Seacoast PD Center

June 7 in Manchester at GMPDC

Additional ICT Support Offerings Coming Soon from LESCN

·    A state-wide ICT Literacy Institute will be held in July to develop portfolio-assessment rubrics and related examples of student portfolio elements (dates and location TBD).

·    Training workshops for specific storage/portfolio solutions will be offered later in the summer and early fall at centers.

NEW STAFF IN OET

======================================

www.nheon.org/oet

The Office of Educational Technology has a new staff member! Stanley Freeda began employment on May 8th at the NHDOE as our eLearning Consultant. Specifically, he will take over the day to day details of coordinating the OPEN-NH project. He comes with a great set of experiences behind him, including a science teaching background, as well as online instruction for Franklin Pierce College and the Virtual High School. Stan also has a ton of experience with NH standards, the most recent of which was working closely with Jan McLaughlin, NHDOE Science Consultant, and the Science Standards Committee to develop the new science frameworks.

If your school is considering online professional development courses, you might want to visit www.nheon.org/opennh and talk with Stan (sfreeda@ed.state.nh.us). OPEN-NH encourages schools to register cohorts of teachers for online courses, to help build communities of learners. Hope to see you online!

INVENTORY LABELS

======================================

If you have purchased equipment using NCLB Title II-D funds, you’ll need inventory labels for each piece of equipment. The numbered labels simply state that the item was purchased with federal funds. To request labels, send an email to Chiggins@ed.state.nh.us indicating the number of labels you need (should match the number of equipment items you purchased), the name of your district, and the project number of the corresponding funds. The project number is the five-digit number listed at the top right corner of the NHDOE “OBM Form 2.”
